Detailed Description Despite the fascination the Mughal and Rajput painters felt for European naturalism, its systematic introduction in India would not have been possible without the ambitious art policy initiated by the Raj in the 1850's. Indeed one of the most powerful effects of the British Raj was on artistic taste.
Brief Description A photo-realist portrait of a Marathi woman, likely to have been painted in the early 1900's when Western techniques of academic realism were being instituted in India. The tactile quality of the skin, the folds of the saree, and the iconography of her ethnicity have been exceptionally captured in this portrait.
