Dr. Ambedkar and his associates visited the Bhima-Koregaon Vijayastambha on the banks of the river Bhima, near Pune, on 1 January 1927. In the war between the Peshwas and the British forces in 1818, the Peshwas were defeated. A large number of Mahar soldiers fought for the British forces and many lost their lives. The Vijaystambha was erected by the British Government to commemorate these valiant soldiers.
