Dr. Ambedkar had founded the Samaj Samata Sangh (League for Equality) on 4 September 1927, for the propagation of social equality. Many prominent personalities from the upper castes like Devrao Naik, Raobahadur Bole, Bhaskarrao Kadrekar and Lokmanya Tilak's son Shridharpant Tilak had also joined the Sangh. The Sangh organised Vedic marriages of Untouchables and shared meals for Touchables and Untouchables. Dr. Ambedkar founded a branch of the Sangh on 8 April 1928, at lokmanya Tilak's Gaikwad Wada in Pune.
