Seen in this picture from the left are Barrister M. R. Jaykar, Sir tej Bahadur Sapru, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Kajolkar, P. Balu and other leaders outside Yerawada Central Jail. During the Second Round Table conference, the British gave the depressed classed the right to form independent electoral bodies. Gandhiji felt that this would further widen the gap between the depressed classed and the other Hindus. He went on a fast to persuade them to give up the demand for independent electoral bodies. Dr. Ambedkar and Gandhiji had differences of opinion on this issue.
Finally, to save Gandhiji’s life Dr. Babasaheb made a pact with him at Pune, whereby he promised that the dalits would accept controlled electoral bodies, instead of independent electoral bodies. This agreement is known as the ‘Pune Pact’.
