Brief Description

The Indian Constitution and the Hindu Code Bill are the two major contributions of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. The Hindu Code Bill was often referred to by the newspaper's as 'Ambedkar Smruti'. He had worked tirelessly to give shape to this Bill. On 13th September 1951, at the meeting of the Congress party, some laws regarding marriage and divorce were passed and it was decided that others like those of inheritance rights would be passed later.

On 17th Septemebr, 1951 the issues arising from the Hindu Code Bill were brought up for discussion in two Parliamentary sessions. Many parliamentarians were of the opinion that these laws should not be enforced upon other religious groups like Muslims, Christians, Jains and Sikhs.

Dr.Shyamaprasad Mukherjee led the debate on behalf of the Hindus. In the picture above Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar discussing the Hindu Code Bill with the representatives of all the religious groups.
