Brief Description

In the village of Bhumara, situated in Nagod, M.P, the ruins of a Siva temple were discovered by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1920. Datable to 5th/6th century A.D the temple is a fine example of Gupta architecture having a square sanctum cella (garbha griha), a covered circumbulatory passage (pradakshina patha) and a hall (mandapa) in front. Fragments of different parts of the temple have been acquired by the Indian Museum. Three carved fragments are represented here.

The left lintel is carved with three rows of square blocks designed with petal and geometric motifs while the right is carved with floral designs. The rectangular slab is carved with full and half lotus motifs.
