Brief Description
This episode from the Bhagavata Purana has been frequently rendered by artists. The maidens or the 'gopis' are in love with Krishna and each desire to be with him. They are bathing in the Yamuna and left their clothes on the banks. Krishna quickly gathered their clothes and climbed on a 'Kadamba' tree. Here the Gopis are seen begging Krishna to return their clothes but Krishna to chastise them, asks them to come out of the water to claim their clothes.
It is said Krishna had complaints that the gopis bathed naked in the waters of the Yamuna, which was considered disrespectful to god Varuna. Krishna resorted to such a drastic step to teach them a lesson. The artist has skilfully rendered the gopis efforts of concealing their nudity with their bodily postures.
