Brief Description
A jharokha painting of Mughal Emperor Jahangir (r.1605-27) holding an image of Madonna in his hand. Here, both Jahangir and Madonna are shown with a halo, equating the figures spiritually. Christian imagery travelled from Europe with missionaries and traders, influencing Mughal miniatures of the time.
Sir Thomas Roe came to the court of Jahangir in 1615 as an ambassador of King James I and remained in the court for three years.
