Brief Description

After abducting Sita, Ravana imprisoned her in the Ashoka Vatika in Lanka. Rama killed Ravana and sent Hanuman to bring back Sita but, as prevailed the tradition those days, would accept her only after she proved her chastity by entering the auspicious fire- Agni-pariksha. Rich in landscape, theme and various activities, this magnificent Kangra masterpiece depicts Sita seated in the flames of fire to prove her chastity. This painting serializes the entire episode.

The extreme right side depicts Sita seated on a heap of burning firewood. She is clad in red, the auspicious colour of a devoted and chaste wife. In the center of the picture, a red complexioned figure, Agnideva- the god of Fire is carrying Sita towards Rama. On the extreme left Rama is seated with Sita on a white rock pedestal. Lakshmana stands in attendance and with full devotion on his side. In front stand a host of gods Shiva, Brahma, Indra and Agni. The monkey army, Sugriva, and others are standing in front of them all witnessing this auspicious union of Rama and Sita. Celestial beings from the sky watch this spectacular event unfold and are showering flowers on the Divine couple.
