The Daniell's were among the first wave of british artist's
working in India and the views they brought back to Britain were
novel and exciting. The fascination of India is evident in the
way this landscape print has been romanticized, blending the
artist's desire to capture the Indian 'country-side' with a
'whiteman's' requirement to document the 'Orient'.
An exceptional water colour done in gray scale (B/w) of a scene
from Fort St.George, present day Chennai. This painting depicts
a
procession, possibly of a royal order, passing over an arched
bridge. In the background is the government building of
St.George. The foreground in that occupies a larger portion than
the background shows the water canal of Fort St.George, and
civilians from different backgrounds, soldiers, cattle owners,
going about their everyday routines.
