| Brief Description |
Raja Ravi Varma was a prolific artist, but so popular that he could often not meet the demands of his patrons. So, his younger brother, Raja Raja Varma, would often help him finish a painting. According to art historians, while Raja Ravi Varma excelled in portraitures, landscape was his younger brother’s forte. The two brothers would often travel by boat at night time, soaking in the quiet atmosphere, the reflection of the moon on the water, or when it disappeared behind a cloud. Silhouetted against the light are trees and distant groves. A woman sits by the glimmering water.
Raja Ravi Varma was a master of realism. This realism was often heightened in his oil paintings by the way he portrayed light and texture. In most of his paintings, for instance, the jewellery worn by the subject is so accurately painted that one can even tell the type of pearls the person is wearing. |
