Brief Description

Raja Sir Tanjore Madhava Rao, K. C. S. I. (1828-1891). A Mahratta Brahman, son of a Dewan of Travancore. After serving the Travancore State in various capacities, he became Dewan in 1858 and introduced some important fiscal reforms. In 1872, he resigned the post of Dewan, and was offered a seat in the Governor-General's Legislative Council, which he declined. In 1873, he was appointed Dewan-Regent of Baroda after the deposition of the Maharaja: the whole Administration was remodelled by him and many useful changes were adopted. He resigned his position in the Baroda State in 1882. Thenceforward until his death in 1891, he lived in retirement in Madras, but continued to take great interest in social and political questions.

A three quarter length figure, the size of life standing and looking straight at the spectator. His right hand is resting on his hip and the left hangs by his side, holding a document. Part of the table with some books on it, is seen on his left. He is dressed in a purple chupkan embroidered with gold lace and thrown loosely over his shoulders; and hanging over the back is a greyish chogah. Suspended by a blue riband round his neck is the jewel of the Star of India, and on his left breast is the Insignia of the same Order.
