The above bust of Major General Sir Henry Havelock, K. C. B. (1795-1857) in uniform, with star and medals. Face turned slightly to spectator's left. Sir Henry Havelock (1795-1857) Major-General; born April 5, 1795; entered the Middle Temple for the bar, but in 1815 went into the army; studied military works diligently. Married a daughter of Marshman, the Serampore Missionary, and joined the Baptist community.
In June, 1857 he hurried from Calcutta to Allahabad in command of the artillery, fought several actions, occupying Kanpur after defeating the Nana Saheb on July 16, 1857; fought more engagements, and after three failures relieved Lucknow in September, 1857, Sir James Outram accompanying his force. Compelled to remain inactive in Lucknow until Sir Colin Campbell arrived in November, he fell ill and died on November 24, 1857. |
