Brief Description

William Pitt Amherst, First Earl Amherst of Arracan (1773-1857). Governor General of Fort William in Bengal (1823-1828). Lord Amherst had already been to the East as Ambassador to China (1816-1817) when he was appointed to suceed Lord Hastings at Calcutta. His administration was chiefly notable for the First Burmese War and the capture of Bharatpur.

He was the first Governor-General to spend the summer at Simla.  Ordered for the Trustees by Lord Curzon, 1922.
