Brief Description

(January 12, 1863 ? July 4, 1902). Swami Vivekananda was an Indian Hindu monk and primarily a disciple of the Ramakrishna Paramhansa. On 1 May 1897 at Calcutta, Vivekananda founded the "Ramkrishna Math"?the organ for propagating religion and "Ramakrishna Mission"?the organ for social service. This was the beginning of an organized socio-religious movement to help the masses through educational, cultural, medical and relief work.

Not a mere religious reformer, Swamiji was an apostle of nationalismand an uncompromising opponent of social tyranny and injustice. An inspiring personality, Vivekananda, by his interpretation of the East to the West, had brought the two parts of the world closer together in a manner not done before.
