The first to arrive in India between 1780 and 1785 among highly talented and adventurous first grade professional British artists was William Hodges. He was perhaps the first and the most original artist to paint the Indian scene. His most striking qualities as an artist were showcased not only in his oil paintings but also in his 'Select Views in India between 1785 and 1788,' a series of forty-eight aquatints published after his return to England from India.
