Brief Description
George Frederick Samuel Robinson (1827-1909) Viceroy and Governor-General, 1880-1884, First Marquess of Ripon (Lord Ripon) who had held many posts of distinction in English public life, was appointed by Mr. Gladstone to succeed Lord Lytton in 1880. His support of the Ilbert bill excited much racial feeling ,but he earned great popularity with the Indian community.
