Brief Description

Brigadier-General Sir Henry Lawrence, K.C.B.(1806-1857): Half length seated figure, in Civilian dress with star on coat, both hands on knees, holding letter. A gallant defender of Lucknow during the Mutiny of 1857 born in Ceylon, on 28th June, 1806; joined the Bengal artillery in February, 1823; Chief Commissioner and agent to Governor-General in Oudh from 21st March, 1857.

Prepared for the defence of Lucknow in the revolt, from May, 1857. After the engagement of Chinhat, on 30th June, limited the defence to the Residency; wounded during the siege on 2nd July and died on 4th July. He wrote essays and books on Indian subjects of considerable literary merit.
